Prevent sofa damage with 5 useful tips
We understand that purchasing a new sofa is an investment, one in which you want to last for years to come. We have put together a few tips on protecting your furniture and therefore preventing common damages such as accidental spillages, stains and even sun damage. If you look after your furniture well you’ll enjoy it for longer and fend off the need for replacement or furniture repair services like ours.
Covers and Throw Overs
Covers and throw covers are a good solution in protecting your sofa. There are a wide range of effective but tasteful options that are able to survive the wrath of children, pets, accidental spillages and stains. It’s all dependent on the type of material and style you are envisioning, but we recommend wool or cotton throwovers for comfort.
However, if you are worrying about pets damaging the sofa and want to save your furniture from endless dog hairs, there are pet sheet throw overs available that are just as stylish and attractive to fit the mood of your room. Sofa protectors are also an inexpensive, long term solution. They simply act as a throw over but are considered to be more effective against liquid spills. We recommend having a look at urbanara or chums for affordable, protective throw overs.
Chemicals and Treatments
It is important that you ask your furniture retailer the best options to protect your sofa and ultimately follow your manufacturer’s cleaning and care label instructions before you apply any type of cleaning products.
Generally with fabric sofas, dirt and dust that remains in the fabric helps break down the fabric fibres which shortens the life of the fabric. Regular vacuuming with a soft brush helps the fabric achieve longevity. For stains, you should avoid common household cleaners, this is because the majority are too harsh for the fabric which can cause even more damage, as well as other products which contain oil or solvents.
For leather sofas, arm rests are regularly exposed to sweat and grease which causes dark spots and breaks down the leather. Water soluble stains should be dealt with a white, soft cloth dipped in lukewarm water, but do not use a rubbing action. Leather sofas thrive best if they are protected from sunlight, drying out and heat. Have a look at leather protection spray to rejuvenate your leather.
Pet Deterrents
Your faithful friend can be your furniture’s worst enemy. There are many pet deterrent sprays in the market that are non harmful to pets and are successful in keeping them off the furniture. Beaphar and Pet Behave spray are training sprays that pets will find unpleasant. It contains harmless substances and can help protect furnishings.
For the more difficult pets that have a hard time understanding the word ‘no’, a high tech pad with audio sound could just do the trick. While placed on the sofa itself, every time a paw lands on it, a noise will escape from the pad. Although this isn’t exactly an ideal solution many people would like, it is shown effective but with it’s unattractive design, it can be left as a last resort.
Cushion Rotation
As I’m sure we all have a favourite spot to sit in and relax, cushions tend to. Plumping cushions is the best way to push air back into them, maintaining their comfort and shape. Give a gentle punch from all sides and re-position them. Rotating your cushions will help even out wear and reduce fading damage from sunlight.
Sun Rotation
Depending on the position of your sofa, it is important to keep it out of direct sunlight as this will otherwise accelerate the natural ongoing discolouration process and cause fading. You are able to protect your suite with sun damage products such as sprays and polishes. However, rotating your sofa consistently will reduce the impact of the sun and although it’s not an ideal task you would like to carry out, it is a worthy one that reduces damage. It’s a pity we can’t move the position of our windows!
